How does shame/pride influence the actions of characters in chapter 9

Pride- I strongly believe that Atticus shows that he has too much self pride to let the case go just because he is defending a man of another ethnicity and I think that the authorial intent is to remind the audience of the major themes in the book for example prejudice. A clear example of this would be in page 83 when Jem asks Atticus why he is defending this “negro”, Atticus says “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in this town, I couldn’t represent this country in this legislature, I couldn’t even tell you Jem not to do something again.” Moreover this quotation also shows that Atticus is against violence and racism and him standing up for this “negro” shows justice, self pride and can be linked with his social expectations.

how has pride been shown in My Last Duchess and

Pride has been presented throughout My last Duchess in many ways, I strongly believe that Robert Browning’s intentions throughout this poem is to make the audience see the effect jealousy and excessive pride has on someone’s life. In this poem there are numerous examples that suggests Duke has alot of self-pride, for example on line 9-10 he quotes “But to myself they turned(since none puts by the curtain I have drawn for you, but I”) . The literal meaning in this quotation is that Duke is the only person who has the ability to look at this painting and also the only one who can draw the curtain. Here you can clearly see that Robert Browning uses dramatic monologue to highlight Duke’s traits and flaws. Self pride is also shown as soon as he mentions “Fra Pandold” (famous painter) and is mentioned several times which shows how Duke is showing off he able to hire a famous painter and bragging about his wealth.

To Kill A Mocking Bird page 1-15 summary

On chapter one jean also called by her nickname “scout” talks about how she remembers Jem (her brother) breaking her arm. “When he was nearly thirteen my brother Jem got arm badly broken at the elbow”

The quotation I chose to analyse is on chapter one page 6 “We lived on the main residential street in town-Atticus, Jem and I, plus Calpurnia our cook. Jem and I found our father satisfactory: he played with us, read to us, and treated us with courteous detachment.”

This short paragraph shows that in the eyes of “scout” Atticus has done nothing and this marks him put as either a good father or a bad one. It can also show that he treats his two children well, but as little adults. “Courteous detachment” -does not criticise and treat them the same way he treats everyone else.

English Coursework

“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone stand in the desert”. Sounds dumb doesn’t it? Im confused with what he is trying to say but at the same time curious, why are they trunkless legs of stone?, and why are they in the desert?…. Is it a statue? Because i have no clue what so ever, even if it was what would it be doing in the desert?….trunkless. Sounds like something a creepy mad man would say.

Last time i heard of something like this it was back home when i was watching a
horror movie with Charlie, my irritating nine year old brother who cant shut his mouth for more than a minute.

There’s nowt wrong with slang”

In this piece of coursework i will be analysing Belinda Webb’s article. I will explore the effects on the reader and give argument for and against along with my opinion on slang and how it is used.
Reading Belinda Webb’s article i though it was very good as it really expressed her views and emotions towards slang. I agree with Belinda Webb because i think that here views are very reasonable and i can relate to what she’s saying. She’s expressed her views towards the use of slang using informal language for example in her second paragraph “this kind of talk has got me vexed” which means that she is angry because of what people are saying, also in the following paragraph she also uses words such as “d’ya get me?” which supportsĀ  one of my points as i think that not all words in slang have negative meanings for example “sick” means excited or that someone is really good at something. Therefore i agree, however to be honest the negative slang words outnumber the positive ones but i think that there is a big exaggeration on the use if slang because teenagers use it to an extent, im sure that when needed they can speak formally and use formal language in an important situation such as a job interview or speaking to a teacher about something eg.

Further moreĀ  in the third paragraph Belinda Webb expresses her views in a way that is saying that types of slang is viewed in a different language.

Sonnet

It’s as sweet as sugar and I can’t resist
She is the full package and is worth it
She stands out and feels just like a soft kiss
I feel like I only have one chance to win

So I don’t really want to miss that one chance
When i see the colour of pink I think….
What would I do with out her, I would die
I want to see her every day, that’s my dream

I would do anything to see her again
But I just can’t afford the price of her
The price goes up but The taste stays the same.

The genocide was the fault of the Rwandan people for agreeing to the racial division

We disagree that the hutu’s started the genocide (Definition: The Hutu are a mostly Roman Catholic and Protestant, French-and-Bantu-dialect-speaking people numbering more than 11 million and populating Rwanda, Burundi, and portions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Hutu arrived in the region before the Tutsis in the 11th century from Chad. While Hutu share much in common with the Tutsis, they are each distinct from the third major ethnic group in the region and the longest inhabitants of the area, the Twa pygmies)

The un dosent really have a army its just country’s giving the un soldiers and the country’s dont want to do it anymore the un are peace keepers not peace makers.

The assassination of the Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana in 1994 actually started it, but many factors led up to it.

There were two ethnic groups involved – the Tutsi and the Hutu. During this genocide, the Hutu, who controlled the government, slaughtered the Tutsi and even moderate Hutu who opposed the Hutu Power beliefs.

These two groups were not friendly, so it was not hard to get them to fight each other. There had already been a genocide in Burundi, right beside Rwanda, in 1972 where the Tutsi killed 200,000 Hutus. So the two ethnic groups were in constant conflict.

In 1990 a group called the Rwandan Patriotic Army, which was the military branch of the Rwandan Patriotic Front, invaded Rwanda from Uganda. The RPA was made up of Tutsi refugees and Ugandan soldiers. It was led by Paul Kagame, who was head of Ugandan Intelligence (like the CIA). So they invaded and stared a civil war, and Hutus (probably fearing they would be killed) began to form militias. Then the Hutu president was assassinated, and in response, the Hutu militia, called Interhamwe, started to massacre Tutsi civilians.

The civil war continued while the genocide was going on. In spite of this, the Tutsi RPA won the civil war. The end result was that Paul Kagame became President of Rwanda.

in reality the tutsi’s agreed to fight and defend themselves and caused the hutu’s to retaliate badly and at the end of the day UN just sat And watched until they finally realised they had to do something about it

Hotel rwanda

At the beginning of the film, Paul bribes a general and a local businessman to ensure that the Hotel Mille Collines, which he manages, runs smoothly and has a steady supply of excellent food and liquor for the wealthy guests. Paul wants to provide a good life for his family by achieving success as a hotel manager.
In Hotel Rwanda the director made the film to try and get his point across to show how the people area seperated because of there colour. The director ingaged the sympothy i the audience and made them feel sorry for the ones that were left behind. The director made the audience relise how it really is in rwanda and that people can make a difference to help Rwanda and it also spread an e emotional feeling to the audience and the director personally aimed for a affective/sentimental feeling and he wanted to express his feeling about the crisis in Rwanda through a film where the audience can see the real truth about what really happens over there and I thought that the film succeeded in doing that because I saw that our class found it sad and really got into the film.
The scene that really shows Paul’s (the protaganist)emotions is the car scene where the weather is misty and the and they think there going to drive into a river because its bumpy but then once the driver stops the car and Paul gets out he see’s all the dead bodies and then knows that he was deliberately sent in that direction to see’s what the Tutsi leader is capable of. Paul was a brave man who wanted to help the tuts i’s from the hutu’s for example During the film he hides many Tutsi refugees in the hotel he manages and bribes the businessman and general in order to save the refugees from the serveir consequences(death). Also another scene that shows his bravery is when he stayed behind to help the refugees instead of going on the UN truck with his family. In hotel rwanda Paul is focused on looking after his family and his family is his first priority and he cares alot for them, an example of this is when he says to his family to go to the roof and jump off if the hutu’s come because their punishments are much more servier.
